Import Email

The Import tab on the Email page copies all folders and messages from a mailbox at another provider into an email account on your webhosting domain.

Email import with one import in progress

Before you start

  • Create the email account on Gigahost first, on the Email Accounts tab. See Creating an Email Account. The import copies into an existing account only.
  • You need the password of that email account. If you do not know it, set a new one with Change Password on the Email Accounts tab.
  • You need the IMAP server, username and password for the mailbox at your current provider. The username is usually the full email address.

Starting an import

  1. Select the domain at the top of the page and open Email > Import.
  2. Under Copy from, enter the IMAP server, username and password of the old mailbox.
  3. Under Copy to, choose the email account and enter its password.
  4. Click Start import.

The import runs on the hosting server. It is listed under Imports in progress until it finishes, and drops off the list when it is done. Imports to every domain on the hosting account are listed.

Start one import per mailbox.

Moving your email to Gigahost

To move a domain's email without losing messages:

  1. Create the email accounts on Gigahost.
  2. Import each mailbox.
  3. Point the domain's MX record to Gigahost. The DNS records button on the Email Accounts tab shows the records to use. See DNS.
  4. When the DNS change has taken effect, run each import again. Messages that reached the old provider in the meantime are copied, and messages that were already copied are skipped.
